In May and November 2019, we organised two Antakshari evenings in collaboration with Geeta Bhawan temple and community centre to explore memories of migration, Partition and home. Music and collective music-making, or singing, is significant in harbouring a sense of belonging and in evoking personal and collective memories.
The evenings were co-designed with key community individuals to make the sessions appealing and engaging for the community group and it was decided that the session would be held through the framework of the musical game of Antakshari.
The game provided a point to reflect on the memories of playing the game itself, in India, in Loughborough and on various coach trips, and to evoke memories through the specific songs that were sung.
